Our Community

Pender Exchange exists to connect neighbours across the Gulf Islands — a place where you can find what you need, pass along what you don't, and strengthen the bonds that make island life special. Whether you're selling a kayak, looking for firewood, or offering a service, you're part of a small community built on trust.

We ask that everyone who uses Pender Exchange be kind, honest, and neighbourly. Treat every interaction the way you'd want to be treated if you bumped into that person at the Saturday market.

Listing Best Practices

A good listing helps buyers find what they're looking for and makes the whole process smoother for everyone. Here are a few tips:

  • Use clear, descriptive titles — Say what it is up front. "Solid oak dining table" works better than "Great deal!!!"
  • Write honest descriptions — Mention the condition, any wear and tear, and anything a buyer should know. Honesty saves everyone's time.
  • Set fair pricing — Price your items reasonably. If you're open to offers, say so.
  • Use accurate photos — Post real photos of the actual item. Avoid stock images or heavily filtered pictures.
  • Respond to inquiries promptly — When someone reaches out, try to reply in a timely manner. A quick response goes a long way.

Safety Tips

Your safety matters. While most transactions on Pender Exchange go smoothly, it's always wise to take a few precautions:

  • Meet in public places — For pickups and exchanges, choose a well-known, public spot. The Driftwood Centre and Hope Bay are popular and convenient meeting points.
  • Bring a friend for large transactions — If you're buying or selling something valuable, having someone else along is a good idea.
  • Never share your banking details — A legitimate buyer or seller will never need your bank account number, passwords, or other sensitive financial information.
  • Trust your instincts — If something feels off about a listing or a conversation, it's okay to walk away. Your comfort and safety come first.
  • Inspect items before paying — Take a moment to look over what you're buying before handing over payment. Make sure it matches the description and works as expected.

Communication

Good communication makes for great transactions. Keep these principles in mind when messaging other users:

  • Be respectful — Keep conversations friendly and courteous, even if you decide not to go through with a deal.
  • Respond promptly — Nobody likes being left hanging. Even a quick "Thanks, but I've decided to pass" is appreciated.
  • Be honest about item condition — If someone asks a question about your listing, give them a straight answer. It builds trust and avoids awkward situations at pickup.
  • Agree on pickup and delivery details before meeting — Sort out the where, when, and how before you head out. Confirm the time, location, and any other logistics so there are no surprises.

Transactions

Pender Exchange is a classifieds platform — we connect buyers and sellers but do not facilitate or process payments. All transactions happen directly between the parties involved.

  • Payment is between buyer and seller — You and the other party are responsible for agreeing on payment terms and completing the transaction.
  • Use cash or e-Transfer — These are the most common and straightforward payment methods for local transactions.
  • Get a receipt for expensive items — For higher-value purchases, it's a good idea to write up a simple receipt with the item description, price, date, and both parties' names.

What to Do If Something Goes Wrong

We hope every transaction goes well, but if something doesn't go as planned, here's what we recommend:

  1. Contact the other party first — Most issues can be resolved with a direct, honest conversation. Reach out and try to sort things out together.
  2. Report the issue to us — If you can't resolve it directly, or if you believe someone is acting in bad faith, let us know at admin@penderexchange.com. We'll look into it and take appropriate action.
  3. Contact local RCMP if criminal activity is suspected — If you believe you've been the victim of theft, fraud, or any other crime, please contact the local RCMP detachment. Your safety and security are the top priority.

Building Trust

Pender Exchange works because our community shows up with good intentions. Here are a few ways you can help build and maintain trust on the platform:

  • Complete your profile — A profile with your name and a bit of information helps other users feel confident about who they're dealing with.
  • Respond to messages — Being reliable and communicative, even when the answer is "no thanks," builds your reputation as a trustworthy community member.
  • Leave the community better than you found it — Whether it's reporting a suspicious listing, helping a neighbour find what they need, or simply being kind in your interactions, every small action contributes to a platform we can all be proud of.

Thank you for being part of Pender Exchange. Together, we can keep this a welcoming and trusted space for everyone in the Gulf Islands.
